I THOUGHT THE SUN ALWAYS SHONE, IN TENTERDEN

On all my visits to Tenterden, over the years - and certainly for the first six Blind Bowlers' fixtures I attended, there has always been bright sunshine.

For this year’s fixture, on Wednesday, July 20th, 2011, it did not rain like last year’s monsoon, but it was nevertheless a pretty damp afternoon ... writes Brian M.

Captain, Margaret, welcomes Brian - and the RBBG bowlers, to Tenterden Bowls Club, before our latest match

Tenterden Bowls Club had a very difficult week, with the unexpected death of a young member, and were short of players. However, with one or two late arrivals and pressing Pat F and Brian into service on the green, we had three RBBG v Tenterden triples plus one which pitched RBBG against RBBG! On that rink, Lynn, Albert and Chris played against Penny, David and Trudy (for the first half) and John (for the second). They had a good scrap and there were only two shots in it, at the end.

Jack, John and Sheila were really unlucky to come up against the strong RBBG unit of Marian, Terry and Hans, when they were really firing on all cylinders - and the result was a win to the visitors, by 24 to 1, including seven shots on end five. That is a nightmare, when you are on the receiving end, and so difficult to come back from. Rink honours to our trio, but a special mention to John who pushed Jack around in the bowls chair; on a pretty damp rink. And to Jack for notching up another match against us - in his 92nd year.

Doreen, Bella and Peter B fought hard, on rink three, to be tied at 6 all, with Eileen, Vie and Gill, after eight ends and were disappointed that the match should be halted prematurely, after ten ends, especially as those last two ends were won by Tenterden, to lead 9-6. But we had lost a deal of time to rain (not that this particular rink had wanted to stop, they left most reluctantly, when the rain came on pretty heavily, again, around 3.30) and at least it allowed Gill to avenge last year’s defeat by the rink which included Bella!

Bill, Pat and Brian had moved into a 6-2 lead, when we broke for rain, with Pat very impressive, but then good bowling by Margaret and Jenny followed up by three great woods from skip, Judith, took four shots in the next end, to square the match. All the bowlers, now, had got into the groove, but some very nice woods from Bill and Pat allowed RBBG to shade this match 13-8, with some very tightly packed ends. Could easily have gone the other way.

With time called, by Captain Brian, despite no rinks nearing the scheduled sixteen ends, we moved to the clubhouse for an excellent tea, organised by Sylvia and George. Most welcome it was, too, after a damp afternoon, but everyone was in high spirits after a great time on the green. I repeat, a wonderful effort from Tenterden, in the most difficult of weeks, and we really appreciate it.
