Three shots, in the first end, gave Terry the best possible start. David sat
on the jack in the next end, only for Terry to move his wood aside for a 4-0
lead.
David’s two shots, in the third end, were to be his only scores – on the day
his weight was good, but his radar slightly awry, so that he had good group-
ings of woods, but at 9 o’clock. Terry applied the screw remorselessly for a
win 11-2.
So it was that Terry took the crown, held by David for the year.
SEMI-FINALS
Terry Thwarts Challenge from Hans to Reach Final August 24th, 2009
In the first end Hans was 6 inches from the jack only for Terry to roll in on a perfect line and weight, rest off Hans’ wood and take the shot by 2 inches. In the next end Hans came in on a perfect line and weight - were it not for Terry’s wood in the way - promoting Terry for two shots in that end. Two more shots for Terry gave him a 5-0 lead, after three ends, but Hans fought back to trail 6-4, after seven ends. Another lovely wood by Hans, in the eighth end, found Terry’s wood in its path and the resulting promotion to two shots for Terry, saw him prevail 8-4 overall.
So, Terry would go on to meet David in the Final.
David Overcomes Challenge from Trudy to Make Final August 17th, 2009
After winning the toss, Trudy left her first jack short and David took full advantage by moving into a four shot lead. Trading shots, it was still that four shot advantage after seven ends, at 7-3. Trudy took a shot at both of the final ends, but it was not enough to stop David from moving into the final, by 7-5.
David, now, waits for the outcome of the other semi-final, between Terry and Hans, to see who his opponent will be in the final.
RBBG Cup - Quarter-Final Matches
Hans Defeats Peter N August 17th, 2009
Peter N played some very good woods, on his return after an absence of several weeks, but Hans managed, for much of the time, to put in a wood or two just that bit closer. Hans took five of the first six ends, to establish a healthy lead that he would never lose. A 10-4 win by Hans did not reflect how well Peter played, but did emphasise the value of regular play.
An interesting sub-feature of the game was that, at times, it was more like ping pong, especially in the end where both players hit the jack, twice. Hans ended up with five strikes on the jack and Peter four, over the course of the match. (Hans takes over the lead from Bella in the ‘Jack High’ sub-competition.)
Terry Edges Out Bill - But Only Just August 10th, 2009
Terry took a 4-1 lead, after 4 ends, but Bill kept coming back at him and nibbling away at the deficit. Terry led 5-4, with two ends to play - but those ends were shared so that a 6-5 win for Terry underlined the story of a very tight contest.
All credit to Bill for running the Pearle Trophy winner so close.
David Beats Chris in Tight Thriller August 3rd, 2009
In the second of our Cup quarter-final matches, Chris put the first jack up, David won the head, in the next end David put the jack up and Chris won the head. They both continued to win the head on the opponent’s jack over eight ends, but David was taking two shots to Chris’ one, so enabling him to move into a three shot lead. Trailing 7-4 at the final end it was backs to the wall time for Chris. He needed all three shots; two woods within two feet saw him take the head but David had third wood to close the match out 7-6.
David now goes on to meet Trudy (who had beaten Marian 7-6 in their match), in the semi-finals.
Trudy Beats Off Comeback From Marian July 20th, 2009
In this, the first quarter-final match of the RBBG Cup, the score was even after 4 ends at 2 all. Trudy picked up 4 shots, in the next 3 ends, to lead 6-2 with 2 ends remaining. Her back to the wall, Marian levelled to 6 all, taking it into sudden death. Marian put up 3 woods straight as a die, but could not find the length, allowing Trudy to take the match in extra time. A great fight.
