MAY ALL GOOD DAYS BE LIKE THIS DAY IN MAY

ROCHESTER BLIND BOWLING GROUP

May Drive & Quiz, at Cranborne, May 29th, 2011

Once again, members of Cranborne Bowling Club, Rochester, invited those from RBBG, to a thoroughly enjoyable day, where the weather permitted us to have a full programme of events, despite the threat that had loomed, earlier.

There were twenty-four bowlers, sending their woods up and down the rinks, over four ends in each of four rounds. Our visually impaired members took up the challenge of playing without the aid of guiding string, but this did nothing to dampen enthusiasm nor efforts. Where and whenever help was needed, Cranborne's members were quick to step in - on several occasions, any one of them was given three or four scorecards to mark! Thanks. There were some impressive tallies, throughout, but when the dust settled and Barry K had checked the cards, it was a delight to hear that our Lynne F had won the topurnament. Well done, to her and everyone that took part.

Eventually, when we had got our breath back, it was time for the second part of the day, the quiz. As usual, Doreen B had compiled a great collection of testing rounds, with many a tricky poser. Five teams sat down to do battle - and battle it was ... Geoff, Will and co sent messages of 'encouragement' across the room, whilst tables two and three (with two teams comprising RBBG members & parners) were set up to have their own mini contest.

Midway through the quiz, Doreen paused in her role as quizmaster only to allow for us to tuck into a smashing buffet, which went down very well with all! Thanks to everyone for the preparation of that.

As the contest neared its conclusion, table three declared that they had chosen the wrong round in which to play their joker. Table two, however, had opted to hold their powder till the last round, 'Pot Luck', and this proved crucial, for when the final scores were announced, the difference between the two teams was due simply to the scores in the two joker rounds, with table two winning by a mere four points.

There were plenty of prizes in the raffle - shared evenly amongst the five tables. When it happened that Bill H's number was called, he stood up, only to hear a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday!". Bill is 90, on Wednesday, so Bill, "Many Happy Returns!", from all at RBBG! Have a great day!!!

Barry K conducted the draw for playing partners in the forthcoming Hayling Island tournament - with some interesting combinations emerging.

Graham W (Cranborne's Captain) made a short speech, telling of his feelings that the day had been a success, to which everyone heartily agreed. It was then that Brian M (RBBG Captain) gave a few short words, expressing how glad we, at RBBG, were so pleased to be associated with such a great club. He was then pleased to present the club a contribution (from RBBG) to Cranborne's funds which have been so severely drained, following a recent restoration task which devastated their own coffers.

All in all, this was an extremely successful day, enjoyed by everyone that took part. We look forward to ... August?
