In an enjoyable encounter, the Rochester Blind Bowling Group travelled to the beautiful village of Marden, for the first match of the new season. The hosts made their visitors very welcome and, after a warming cup of tea, the players walked out onto the carpet-smooth rinks.

RBBG put out four teams for the match of triples, each aiming to play 18 ends. Indeed, it had been feared that the match might not take place, had the forecast been proved accurate.

All four games were played in an extremely friendly atmosphere, though the sudden drop in temperature, shortly after the tea break, restricted the teams to 16 ends. Despite valiant efforts from RBBG players, we lost by 3 sets to 1.

The only team to register a win was that of Marian Russell, Terry Fisher and Hans Farley. Their match had tip-toed along, either side leap-frogging the other till the score reached 4-3 to the home side. The next few ends were critical, with RBBG's bowlers taking a commanding lead of 12-4 by tea. After the interval, however, Marden surged back, taking 5 points at the next two ends. At the very last end, it looked ominously likely that Marden would steal the victory, as they surrounded the jack with four home woods - only for RBBG to clinch the win with a further two points, to win the tie by 14-9.

The hosts served up a splendid tea and the feast was brought to a close by the announcement that Marden Bowls Club was making a donation to the funds of RBBG, for which we would like to add a warm note of thanks.
