OUR 2011 TRIP TO HAYLING ISLAND

THE RESORT

The weekend, planned and organized by Aubrey and Doreen B in conjunction with Barry K, has been an even greater success than last year’s trip. There were hitches that had threatened to disrupt proceedings, and not everything ran smoothly, during the weekend, with several substitutions having to be made during the bowls tournament, which was the main focus for members of Cranborne Bowling Club and RBBG.

Those of us not travelling by car were treated to the comfort of a coach, dedicated to senior citizens’ journeys; even the vehicle’s registration plates were humorously appropriate, L8 OAP! On arrival at the Warner’s Lakeside Coastal Village, we learned, very quickly, that the whole resort was oozing with high quality, in every respect. We were met, straightaway, by a receptionist who told us to leave our luggage, so it could be distributed to our rooms. She gave us welcome packs and keys, then led us to the restaurant, where we were shown our seating arrangements.

Dinner was served from six-thirty until seven-thirty and the splendid menu comprised a plentiful choice for all three courses, on each evening. The waiters, all smart and cheerful, were quick to offer help, where needed, and were prompt in taking orders and serving food. Opportunities for self-service were always available, as each evening’s choices included a couple of carvery meals and a wide selection of vegetables and salad. Breakfasts would be as abundant, with cereals, including hot porridge, fruit and yoghurt, freshly prepared pancakes, a full English breakfast, toast and jam or marmalade. For all-in residents, lunchtime meals were served, but our members could find plenty to eat at the various bars around the resort.

Shortly after dinner, most of the RBBG contingent gathered outside the chalets in the Flamingo block. It has become a part of our trips to meet up for a sing-song and this was to be no exception. We spent the next two hours singing many old favourites.

Making our way to chalets, we could not help but be impressed by the recreational facilities available on the site. There was provision for many activities, including archery, indoor and outdoor bowls, crazy golf, pitch and putt, pistol shooting, swimming and many art and craft sessions. There were even lessons offered for budding guitarists! Having investigated our accommodation, we did not wait long before visiting the outdoor bowling area. Marian, Terry, Pat, Albert, Lynn, Tom and Hans joined Geoff, Will and Graham on the rinks, and soon learned that the surface was mighty quick. This would prove an interesting factor to many in the forthcoming tournament.

Towards the end of the evening, one of our members, Stan, took ill. However, thanks to the swift response from Lakeside’s duty medical team, Stan was treated on the spot and an ambulance arrived, shortly, taking him to hospital at Cosham. Being familiar with the local area, Patsy B was quick to volunteer her car and took Connie (Stan’s wife) and Brian M to the hospital.
