MARIAN INTO SECOND FINAL

CUP

Marian R v David N - September 14, 2011 (SF)

The cup semi final between Marian and David produced some first class bowling.

Marian was straight into her stride in the first, two woods within fifteen inches of the jack, then she ran jack with her first wood in the second end, finishing two inches away. David took second wood until Marian’s last rested six inches from the jack to take another two shots.

In the third Marian set a longer jack but she was short with all three woods, David taking two. Marian got her length back in end four and held two until David came in for shot and he was only trailing by one at 3-4. It was his turn, then, to put two woods within five inches in the fifth and he took the lead at 5-4.

End six was amazing. Marian’s first wood was just one and a half inches from the jack. David took second wood, three inches from the jack, only for Marian to move the jack and her first wood, albeit only by an inch or two, but away from David. David was now just five inches from the jack but third wood! And that is how the head finished, Marian back in front by 6-5.

End seven saw Marian’s second wood played too strongly but it caught her first, short, wood perfectly and eased it right onto the jack. A good final wood gave her two shots and now at 5-8 down David was under pressure. He responded well, promoting his own wood into shot but on a measure it was just one and he was 6-8 down going into the final end. Where for the first time the standard dropped, though there was still drama but Marian took one shot to win 9-6 overall.

A terrific match, worthy of a bigger audience than just the marker, and it is Marian who goes forward to meet Terry in the final of the Cup.

Penny G v David N - September 5, 2011 (QF)

When David led 7-2, after six ends, it looked a long way back, for Penny. But three shots, in the seventh, and she was in with a chance. David, though, took a shot in the next, so he had a three shot lead, going into the final end; when he put his wood on the jack, it looked all over. Penny was not done, however, and pushed David off the jack! Alas, she could only make two and David was home, 8-7.

Marian R v Doreen W - September 5, 2011 (QF)

Doreen took a three shot lead, before Marian opened her account, then two fantastic woods, in the fourth, gave Marian a 4-3 lead. Doreen held two in the fifth, until Marian’s final wood took the end, but Doreen came back with a single, in the sixth, and it was 5-4 to Marian. Marian took two, in the next, and, in the eighth end, Doreen had to get at least a shot. Marian put all three woods within fifteen inches of a 31 yard jack and it was all over, a 10-4.

Hetty S v Chris P - August 22, 2011 (Q-F)

Chris took three shots on the first end but then surrendered three shots in a truly awful second end where neither of the players were anywhere near the jack.

rom 3-3 the lead changed hands before again Hetty took shot with her final wood to again square the match after six ends at 5-5. A wick at the next cost Chris the shot; Hetty kept up the pressure with shot in each of the next two ends to take the match 8-5.

Hetty S v Peter B - August 22, 2011

Peter met a very on form Hetty. She had seven points on the board before he opened his account, but then she continued with her immaculate play to take the match 13-2

John R v Lynne F - August 8, 2011

John, in his first season, played Lynne, a model of consistency. John is picking things up well, and even took all three shots in end three to lead 4-1, But Lynne immediately cam back with two of her own in the fourth before single shot wins in the last four ends took her home 8-3.

Trudy R v Chris P - August 8, 2011

Chris started like a train with three shots in the first but it was 4-4 after four ends and 5-5 after six. But then it was one way traffic as Chris scored five unanswered shots in the last three ends to win 10-5

David N v Bella W - July 11, 2011

Fresh from a semi final at Gravesham, David continued his good form and made life hard for Bella. David found that one wood to take shot in the first three ends, then gradually turned the screw.

Bella finally got the shot to put her on to the scoreboard, but then David closed the game out at 9-1.

Marian R v Hans F - July 4, 2011

Marian prevails against Hans

Three shots to Marian in end four were the difference after six ends when Marian had the lead at 7-4, and after setting the jack at her favourite thirty yards, in end seven, she took two shots to lead 9-4, Hans agonisingly short with his last wood. Then after setting the jack at twenty eight yards, in the eighth, Marian pushed it up that further two yards with her first wood! But it was Hans who rolled two woods into shot to stay in the match, going into the last end.

Penny G v Bill H - June 20, 2011

Penny and Bill traded shots in the earlier exchanges, with three to Bill putting him into the lead by 4-3 in end four. But Penny came back with three of her own in the next end, held off three good woods from Bill in end six to take a single shot, then closed it out to take a comfortable 12-4 victory.

At 9-6 down, he had the jack and decided to break up Marian’s rhythm with a very long jack. Strategy excellent, weight perfect but he pushed the jack a fraction wide off the rink. The jack went to Marian; she dropped it in at thirty yards – where else? – and collected a shot to take her through to the next round, with a margin of 10-6.

Marian goes into the next round, where she will take on Doreen W, who beat Norman W in her first round match.

  Doreen W v Norman W - June 20, 2011

Three shots to Doreen in the third end put her 4-1 ahead but shots to Norman in three of the next four ends saw the match tied at 5-5 after seven ends. Two to Doreen in the next end saw Norman needing two of his own in the final end to take it to extra time – he could only manage one and Doreen was through a keenly fought match by the tightest of margins at 7-6.

SHIELD

Peter B v Marian R - September 19, 2011 (SF)

It was a whitewash in the Shield semi final, but the score, so often, does not reflect a game. Marian’s consistency was immediately in evidence, as she took a shot in both of the first two ends, although Peter had held shot a foot from the jack, in the third; playing the last wood, he seemed to have perfect line and length to take two, but his wood caught Marian’s short wood and promoted it marginally inside his own shot wood. What looked odds-on for 2-2, after three ends, became 3-0 to Marian.

And to rub it in, Marian’s first, in the next end, was good weight but just moving wide at the end, when it caught the string and ran onto the jack. Peter got close, but not close enough and, again, he had second and third woods, but shot to Marian put her 4-0 ahead. She was, again, three inches from the jack, with her first wood, in the next – how do you play against that? Very well, in Peter’s case; he held two, in the next, when – guess what, Marian put her last wood right on the jack and another single shot meant 6-0 to Marian, after six ends.

For six ends Marian had got the shot that mattered, Peter second and third. He needed a miracle, but it was not forthcoming. Mercilessly, Marian took all three in the seventh and match over. Peter had put in some good woods, but every time, Marian was better, and she goes forward to meet Hans, in the Shield final.

Hans F v John R – September 5, 2011 (SF)

Three shots in each of ends two and four took Hans into a five shot lead, at 7-2. The next four ends were shared, 3-3, which preserved that five shot lead and Hans was home, at 10-5. Nevertheless, all credit to John for an excellent performance which needed consistent placement by Hans to prevail.

Doreen W v Peter B – September 5, 2011 (QF)

Doreen was two up, after two ends, before she promoted Peter’s wood, then he promoted himself and ran through for two, to be 2-2. Doreen’s last saved a shot, in the fourth, so she was just one behind, then her last, in the fifth, promoted Peter again, so that he took three in the end and a 6-2 lead, overall. A measure gave Peter two more, in the next, but then Doreen took two, so her deficit was still four, with two ends to play. She needed a win, preferably a big win, in the end, and she was holding two, and her last was good, also, but Peter’s final wood in the end was immaculate. He took shot and the match 9-4.

  Penny G v Marian R – September 5, 2011 (QF)

Penny ran into Marian, in imperious form. 13-2 tells its own story

Chris P v John R – September 5, 2011 (QF)

John is playing remarkably well, in his first year, and a shot, in each of the first four ends, put him 4-0 up. Chris came back for two, they traded single shots, in the next two ends, then another to Chris, so at 5-3 down, in the penultimate end, he was still in the game. But two shots to John finished a tight match, 7-3, in John’s favour.

Marian R v David N - August 22, 2011

Three shots in the first to Marian but David levelled after three ends. It was Marian’s final wood in the next that saved the day as David was holding two, at least, and she added two shots in the fifth.

n end seven David twice ran the jack to hold two, before Marian produced the winning wood to take another shot and lead 7-3. David took shot at the next but he had to win the eighth to stay in the match. Marian took it on a measure and she was through at 8-5.

Doreen W v Bella W - August 8, 2011

Two all after three ends, Doreen took a big step in the next with three to lead 5-2, but two shots in each of the next two ends put Bella ahead at 6-5. Two shots to Doreen, she led 7-6 after end seven, two shots to Bella, she led 8-7 after eight. Doreen got the one she needed in the last end to tie 8-8 after nine ends and it was sudden death. It was Doreen who came through, two shots to win 10-8 after a fiercely fought contest which they both thoroughly enjoyed.

Nroman W v Hans F - July 11, 2011

Hans was 9 inches from the jack in the first end but Norman took a wick and rested off Hans’ wood for shot, and a measure in the second gave Norman the lead at 2-0. In the next two ends, it was Hans’ turn to nick shot and tie the match at 2-2.

Two woods a foot from the jack in end five put Hans in the lead at 4-2, which he increased to 7-2 with three good woods in end six, whilst Norman sent his new woods past the jack. Norman needed a score in end seven but saw Hans put woods 6 and 10 inches either side of the jack. With his last wood Norman attempted to run the jack to his back woods; He was so close but only nudged the jack onto Hans’ wood at nine o’clock, and two shots meant an unassailable 9-2 lead for Hans.

Peter B v Terry F - July 4, 2011

Peter turns up trumps in the Shield

There was never more than a single shot in any end. Terry threatened to get off to a flying start, as he held two in the first end, but Peter’s last wood was good enough to take shot. Then, Peter held shot fifteen inches in front of the jack; Terry’s wood was right on line, but stopped just two inches from taking shot – Peter now two up. And a similar position in end three, with Peter closer, nine inches from the jack, but again Terry fractionally short on the final wood, now 3-0 to Peter.

Terry was holding shot on each of the next two ends before Peter’s final woods took shot and a 5-0 lead. Finally, in the sixth end, Terry got on the scoreboard, but with three ends to play, he needed shots, and quickly. He held two in the seventh, till Peter’s final wood took a wick off his own short wood and closed onto the jack. Now, 6-1 to Peter and only two ends to play. Terry needed at least two shots to stay alive, and he held them, till Peter with that final wood again did the necessary by slipping in to second wood and at 6-2, game over.

Penny G v Bill H - June 27th, 2011

Penny G and Bill H were drawn to play each other, in both competitions. This week it was their meeting for the Shield.

This time, Penny got off to an even better start, moving into a 6-0 lead, after three ends. Bill’s response, though, was even better – taking seven shots, over the next three ends, taking a 7- 6 lead with three ends to play.

But Penny, then, turned the screw, taking three shots in both ends seven and eight, to put the match beyond Bill, at 12-7 to Penny. In the next round, she will face either Marian R or David N.

Lynne F v Chris P - June 20, 2011

Chris was in merciless form, as he carried the jack in the first end to take a single shot lead. Another shot in the next end was followed by two as, again, he carried the jack, in end three. Lynne was then holding in end four - he really did say ‘I’m not having that!’ and promptly pushed her out to take shot and lead 5-0.

Two good woods, from Chris, were followed by a wick off Lynne to take all three in end five and, at 8-0 down, Lynne was looking down the barrel. Another wick put Chris in for shot in end six and Lynne needed maximums to stay in the match. Chris put his first 18 inches from the jack. Lynne pushed him out to hold shot. Another close wood from Lynne and she was holding two, but her third was baulked by Chris’ short wood and he rubbed it in, coming round the outside of the head to sit on the jack and deny Lynne even a consolation shot. At 10-0 it was all over and Chris was through.
