It was entirely by chance that Marian and Terry were, again, drawn to play together, but it meant a very formidable pairing was preserved. The final, on April 12th, 2011, saw them retain their status as champions.

Marian and Terry won the toss against Trudy and Bill and set the first jack at all but maximum distance, taking a one shot lead on a measure. Marian immediately set a short jack at 25 yards. And they set up a cluster of woods around the jack. Both of Bill’s last two woods found the gaps and rolled through, leaving five shots to Marian and Terry. Back up to 32 yards in end three, they both had two woods within eighteen inches of the jack and so were swiftly 10-0 up.

End four was played at 33 yards and Trudy and Bill found their distance. They had second, third and fourth woods but Terry slipped inside for shot and an 11-0 lead. Another change of length, to 28 yards, in end five, saw yet another cluster of woods, with Bill again finding all the gaps. And a four shot margin meant a huge14-0 lead.

Back up to 34 yards but this time in end 6 Trudy and Bill made the adjustment, roaring back with four shots. For the first time, the underdogs could set the jack, and they needed to win the remaining ends by big margins, but sadly Trudy’s long jack, which would have been just under maximum length, finished just outside the rink line. Although Marian set a longish jack at 32 yards, Trudy’s woods finished in a cluster at 34 yards – the length she had wanted to set – and, despite Bill twice pinging his opponents bowls to take second place, that was all he could manage and a single shot win by Marian and Terry gave them a 15-4 lead with two ends to play. Really big wins needed now for Trudy and Bill.

It was too much. Bill’s wood took shot but at 15-5 the players shook hands as Marian and Terry could not be caught. In her first final, Trudy could not reproduce the consistency that marked her earlier rounds, and Bill did not repeat the devastating wicks of his semi-final. The favourites had played a clever game, mixing up the jack lengths, and Marian and Terry had fully justified their tag as favourites.

The win meant that Marian and Terry retained their Couples Crown - what chance on them making it a hat-trick, next year?
