The forecast rains did not arrive, but some large clouds kept the sun away, for long periods, and it was pretty chilly, at times, in a very, very strong wind. On occasions it was difficult to stand still and the wind was certainly a factor, during the afternoon. Borstal had the experience and expertise to handle it, for RBBG it was a learning experience but credit to our bowlers for a good performance.
Bill, Penny, Bella and Ian led 5-3, as they traded shots for 7 ends with Mayna, Maureen and Dave, but then Borstal took 5 ends in a row, to lead 10-5. RBBG came back to trail by just two shots, but Borstal finished strongly, winning by 16-8.
It was a similar story for Trudy, Ann, David and Hans, when they trailed only by two shots at the halfway stage, to Di, Brian and Ann, but although the heads remained closely grouped, Borstal took the next six ends to lead 16-4 after 14 ends and as they demonstrated their combined skill, they took the match by 23-4.
Peter B, Norman and Hetty lost 27-4 to Shirley, Bill and Mo, but the scoreline does not reflect the tightness of the contest. Borstal showed their skills, with the knack of putting in the shot that counts, despite very good bowling by our team.
The contest of the day was on rink 3, where Doreen, Terry and Pat took a 15-4 lead, after 11 ends, only for Roger, Bill and Jill to fight back strongly. On the mat for the last end RBBG were still in the lead 15-12 – likely winners? No, Borstal took 4 shots to win 16-15. Disappointment for RBBG, but a great performance and Doreen will learn, as Pat and Terry know well as experienced bowlers, that it’s never over till it’s over.
Back in the warmth of the clubhouse, there was another super Borstal tea for us, in the company of a very nice group of people who happen to be excellent bowlers. We hope they had a successful evening, too, with a league match and top spot at stake.
And as a further demonstration of their generosity, the raffle proceeds were handed to us, by Captain Jill – a lovely finish to a great day.
