One of the pleasures of playing in a bowls match for Rochester Blind Bowling Group is that we journey to some of the many beautiful locations, here in Kent – the Garden of England. This was a case in point, as RBBG fielded four teams to take on Biddenden Bowling Club, on Tuesday, June 16th. In this quiet, rural setting, the hosts welcomed us, as the sun beat down on the verdant carpet square.
In the first encounter, Doreen Warrington, Peter Bradshaw and skip, Ian Aviolet, did more than enough to be in contention and, at the interval, they were holding the opposition, at 7-all. From the restart, however, Biddenden (Denise, Judy and Keith) pulled away to a comfortable victory margin of 24 to 10.
In the next triple, Trudy Rowing, David Norton and Pat Fisher took on John, Laurie and Martin – with Ann Lake coming on for Trudy in the second half. This was a good tussle, with the home side, eventually, coming out on top, by 15 points to 9.
Tony, Margaret and Mick took a slender lead into the tea break, against Bill Hardy, Hans Farley and Hetty Stewart. Norman replaced Bill, as the visitors kept in touch. At the last of sixteen ends, Biddenden were 11-9 ahead and holding 2, when a marvellous drawing shot from skip, Hetty, removed two of the opponents woods to snatch the end, making the margin of victory a single point.
In the fourth triple, Marian Russell, Bella Williams and Pat Clements were matched against Bill, Maggie and Brian. Here, the RBBG team worked hard for points, but were eventually overhauled by 23 points to 8.
It will be noted, dear reader, that the author of this piece revels in mentioning tea! Indeed, it would be a gross injustice, were he not to do so, for on each visit we have been treated to a handsome spread and this was no exception, thanks to Pete and Margaret who prepared the refreshments, on this occasion. What must be added is a warm vote of thanks to our own Bella, for the savoury pastries and cakes she baked – indeed, she invariably produces a tasty contribution to every table!
So, to sum up, we lost the match, but a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by one and all. Biddenden were splendid hosts and made us very welcome. We look forward to another match, in the not too distant future. Pictures below and in our Slide Show and Gallery
