The RBBG Quiz team (Doreen, Chris, Norman and Hans), joined by Evelina and Brian, was invited to a quiz hosted by the Sevenoaks Blind Club, on Friday, September 10th. Starting at 2 p.m., this was a fun afternoon, enjoyed by members of all the teams taking part. The Quiz Master, Phyllis, called the questions brightly and clearly over a superb p.a. system.
Apart from RBBG, there were five other teams, Sevenoaks entered an A team and a B team, there was a team from Medway and Maidstone, called M&Ms, another team called themselves Bits and Bobs, whilst there was also a team known as the Tinkerbells!
As in most such events, there was a rolling round, requiring teams to find as many names of US states as possible, all beginning with the letter M. By the time this was collected, most teams, including RBBG, had found all eight correct answers.
In the first round, Places, RBBG achieved nine out of ten points, being unable to remember the country nearest to the point where the Titanic sank; Sevenoaks A scored likewise.
In the second round, titled People, there was a trick question: “Who was the last Prime Minister not to have a wife?” RBBG scored ten, but Sevenoaks A went into the lead as they used their Joker.
Round three consisted of questions taken from the TV favourite, Mastermind and the next round, Medical Matters, threw a couple of tricky posers, especially “What is the everyday name for singultus?”
In round five, the questions were about All Creatures Great and Small. By this time, it was clear that there were three teams vying for the lead: Sevenoaks A, RBBG and the Tinkerbells, although the remaining teams were doing their level best to keep in contention.
Round six saw RBBG and two or three other teams use their Jokers, as the questions were based on food. It was the right move, as the team from Rochester Blind Bowling Group scored a maximum.
So, at the end, RBBG were victorious, with 77 points. Sevenoaks A came second, but were always there or thereabouts. And, in hot pursuit, there were the Tinkerbells, finishing just a further point behind.
This was a fun afternoon, which everyone enjoyed. Anyone who knows RBBG will also be pleased to see that the hosts provided a splendid tea, which rounded off the afternoon in perfect fashion.
Sevenoaks Blind Club, thank you for inviting us to a very pleasant afternoon’s quizzing and feasting.
