Wadsworth Final

David v Maurice

We have some cracking finals and this last final of 2019 was top class. With Maurice retaining his Gravesham trophy David was the underdog, despite some very good play this year, but he began with great line and length to lead 4-0 after three ends. Maurice threatened in the second end as he matched David’s line, but he was two yards short with his first wood and the next two, bang on line but with better weight, both ran into the preceding wood.

Despite trailing 0-4 Maurice had been bowling well and when David suddenly lost his weight, Maurice cashed in for three shots in both the fourth and fifth ends, no wood further than eighteen inches from the jack, to lead 6-4. When his opening wood in the sixth nudged the jack two inches and settled one inch in front, it looked ominous for David, but his own first wood would have taken shot had Maurice not got there first! David had absolutely spot on line and length but Maurice’s wood largely hid the jack. David took a tiny wick – he was almost at full stop – and finished at two and a half inches. David had another very good try but with woods at two and a half and six inches he had nowt to show for it! One to Maurice and he now led 7-4.

On a twenty nine yard jack in the seventh with four woods in a very tightly packed head it was David at shot. Maurice’s last wood looked set to be right on the jack. He took a wick but still ended shot. Now David’s last wood also looked to be perfect line and length, but he too took a wick, and on a measure it was shot to Maurice for 8-4. David pulled one back in the eighth, for 5-8 and was holding two in the ninth till Maurice’s final wood took shot at three inches. A moment before Maurice looked like his lead would only be 8-7, that final wood took him to 9-5.

In the tenth David again took shot, again increased it to hold two but he was short with his last wood. With his own last wood Maurice took second, on a measure, so David had only pulled it back to 6-9 as they played the last end. David needed all three shots, and with a wood to one foot on a twenty-nine yard jack he had made a good start, even with Maurice putting his own first wood a similar distance from the jack. Unfortunately, David left his last two woods short, so the end went to David but the match to Maurice 9-7. There was some superb bowling from both players, a shame someone had to lose, but Maurice is the 2019 Wadsworth winner.
