Rochester Ladies Final

Alison v Penny

The first two ends of this final went to default 30 yard jacks and with Penny short with all her woods Alison had a tidy 6-0 lead in the bank. On 28 yard jacks in the next two ends Penny was very much in the hunt but Alison took one shot in the third end and two in the fourth, woods at six inches and a foot, hard to beat. Trailing 0-9, Penny had to respond and on a 25 yard jack in the fifth she bowled to six inches and took second for 2-9.

In the sixth end Penny had three great woods but Alison took it at three inches. Another 27 yard jack, this time it was shot to Penny. She was jack high with her last wood but pushed it just too wide and had to be content with one for 3-10. On another 25 yard jack in the seventh it was a measure for the two ladies until Alison’s last wood moved the jack in her favour for two and she led 12-3.

Penny had to win everything now and she held two shots in a 28 yard ninth end as she bowled her final wood. It was again jack high, perfect weight, but again she had pushed it too wide to take all three shots. So at 5-12 she could not catch Alison. Those first four ends had given her too great a mountain to climb and Alison was bowling too well to allow that.

Penny was genuinely pleased to see Alison win her first shield – and then asked if they could swap woods to bowl back to the clubhouse. So an extra end was played, with as much grace and dgood humour as the previous nine, and, would you believe it, Penny took two shots – but Alison would not agree to a permanent exchange of woods! Congratulations to Alison on her victory, and to both ladies for some good bowling on a beautiful morning .
