Chatham v RBBG

CHATHAM ROLLS OUT THE (GREEN) CARPET

Chatham’s non-playing Captain for the day, Keith, is also their greenkeeper and what a wonderful surface he provided. It played beautifully, it looked good enough to roll up and fit in your living room. Despite another baking day, just tempered by a slight breeze.

Though Barbara, Terry and Hans were having a tough time on rink 5 accumulating shots as Chatham’s Jeanette, Wally and Peter were in great form and really knew their green. It was still most enjoyable at 5-24!

On rink 4 Marian, Julie and Mark were leading 7-3 at halfway. It was not simply that Tony, understandably, needed a little time to acclimatise as he took over from Julie, as some of the groupings of woods from Joe, Martin and Chris were phenomenal as they picked up points to win 18-9. I think it was Martin who put three successive woods within eight inches or so of the jack. Pretty special bowling. Similarly on rink 3, Bella, then Penny, Michael and Maurice were bowling well but Tony, John and Eric were getting the better of the measures to win 14-6.

So it was that RBBG rink honours went to Tom, David and Geoff on rink 2 where very long jacks were the order of the day against Ken, Paul and Soozie. Our hosts had no particular problem with the length, as it was David in most trouble, but Tom and Geoff took enough shots for a narrow 12-9 victory, with rarely anything but a single shot dividing the teams.

We were ready for tea on one of the hottest days of the year. There was some good quality bowling on a beautiful green with some very welcoming people – what more could you want!
