Birchington v RBBG

We so often talk about the weather. No exception here. After Monday night’s deluge Mick, Birchington’s fixture secretary, asked us not to bring thunder or lightning, I promised we would not bring rain, and we didn’t but…. Not a flicker of sunshine all day and a very strong, chill breeze. Carole on rink 4 was pulling her collar up around her face and saying she was miffed with her skip, Ron, who would not lend her the big scarf he was wearing. Warm jackets were everywhere, bowling against the wind was tricky. Walking against the wind was tricky!

When I put David, Tom and Mark together I thought it was a strong unit, I would have bet money on them. Even when I saw that Birchington’s captain for the day, John, was lead, rather than skip – he played with Carol and Jerry. What a strong unit our hosts proved to be! To spare blushes I will not give figures, just say that it was record shots deficit, that’s how good they were. Good job I could not place that bet!

Our other three triples also lost, but not heavily, and by almost identical margins. For the record (Birchington names first)

Pru, Rod and Andy beat Bella/Penny, Tony and Geoff 19-10, by 9 shots

Danny, Pat P and Pat F beat Terry, Barbara and Hans 22-13, by 9 shots

Nigel, Carole and Ron beat Marian, Julie and Mark 15-7, by 8 - so rink honours to this trio, by 1 shot!

There were a lot of good bowlers on the green, lots of good bowling despite the conditions, and we have to say that the green itself was perfect, what a pleasure. But the real story of the day was expressed in a nutshell by Pat on rink 5. With the broadest smile on her face she said ‘I have never heard so much laughter on the green’. Pure enjoyment, everywhere, credit to everyone, including our wonderful markers, Jane and Sue. The best possible advertisement for bowling as a sporting and social activity.

Mentions, too, for Mick and Val behind the scenes, major contributions. And I forgot, at the end to thank Bella for another mammoth bake. It all added up to a great day and, you guessed it, everyone left with a big smile on their face!
