27 April 1927 – 13 November 2019

Bella had to contend with so many health problems over the years, but she never complained about it. (She did complain about a few other things, you always knew where she stood on any given subject!) ‘We’ll get over it or under it, one of the two’ she would say. The last few days, when she looked ill, you knew she must be ill. Bella passed away on 13 November 2019 in Medway Maritime hospital.

At 63 Bella would have had energy to spare, and the formation in 1990 of a bowls group in Medway was just what she needed. She loved the game, winning some internal competitions and ready to match herself against other partially sighted bowlers across the country. By the time the group reorganised itself in 2008 as the Rochester Blind Bowling Group she was our guiding light. And though her health and the passing years took a toll, she continued to play in club matches, and she even managed to win another competition in her mid 80s. A force of nature, when you met her, you remembered her, and the clubs we played loved her for her determination and her sense of fun.

At times cantankerous, always stubborn, she was nevertheless the most generous and supportive of those she liked; she loved the group and could not have done more for us. Bella’s raffle, for example, at our Christmas lunch, regularly featured 40 plus prizes which she had purchased through the year without requiring reimbursement from the group. All proceeds went straight into our group funds.

The group meant so much to her, and she meant so much to us as well. It will not, most assuredly, be the same without her.
