Wadsworth semi final, Penny v Maurice

Maurice made a flying start to the match, going 7-0 up after three ends. Only one end was at the maximum 30 yards, and Penny was in a measure for second, but our green, with such long grass, is a challenge for everyone and Penny was generally short of the jack.

By the fourth, at 27 yards, Penny was finding more length, she held two, Maurice took second, the Penny reclaimed second with her final wood to trail 2-7. She took shot in the fifth, at 29 yards, Maurice took a double wick to find his way into shot, then Penny reclaimed it to go 3-7. And her wood to sixteen inches in the sixth gave her another for 4-7.

The measure favoured Maurice in a 26 yard seventh and two shots put him back ahead by 9-4, but a spirited response from Penny on another 26 yard jack in the eighth saw her take three shots to put her back in touch at 7-9. Both players tried to set a short jack on the final end, both were short and our competition rules saw the jack placed at 30 yards. It was too long for Penny and It is Maurice who goes through to the final.

Bella’s Shield - Alison v Hans

With Alison on discomfort after her holiday sunburn Hans decided to keep the jack short. For the first half it was 25 yards, the second half was played at 27 yards or thereabouts. Alison was very short in the first end, Hans very long in the second and after two ends it was 3-3. Alison took the third on a measure, then put up two very good woods in the fourth to lead 6-3.

Hans took the fifth by a single shot in the fifth to go 4-6 but it was Alison in the next two ends, taking single shots on a measure, so that she led 8-4 with two ends to play. Hans needed to win the end but Alison produced the classic opening wood, at three inches, to make it very hard for him. He had two very good woods, but not as close as 3 inches, then his final wood, played with extra weight, shaved Alison’s shot but did not move it. Another to Alison at 9-4 and she could not be caught. Alison now plays David in the semi final.
