Wadsworth – Julie v Geoff

Julie’s first experience of singles matchplay was against Geoff, fresh from a win against Maurice. And Geoff was quickly away, but Julie took second in the first end, and almost took two in the second end but moved the jack a little too far and it was just the one to be tied 1-1. In the third It was Geoff shot at fifteen inches, Julie second till Geoff’s final wood slipped smoothly in to sit on the jack for two. Geoff had woods in the next ends no further than a foot from the jack but Julie was pegging him back by taking second. She had a blip in the fifth end, short, allowing Geoff to cash in but in the sixth she herself took two, just a whisker from three shots to trail 3-6.

Julie held shot in the seventh till Geoff pushed out her out, and in the eighth he bowled to one inch – no arguing with that and Geoff took the match 8-5.

Wadsworth – Penny v Michael
Even though the grass was showing signs of being burnt by the sun Penny and Michael started their match with a minimum length jack and kept that length for the majority of the time.

Penny started the quicker and found her length with a toucher in the second end with Michael having to draw in for second to stop Penny picking up three.

After four ends Penny was leading 5-0 and although Michael won the fifth end with one shot he was unable to increase his score until the eighth end when the match was out of his reach. Final score was 7-4 to Penny.

Bella’s shield – David v Terry M

David elected for the 30 yard maximum but both players had big trouble with the fast surface, maybe the fastest we had ever had at Cranborne. Six of the ends were played on a reset 30 yard jack as the jack and their woods were running on so freely. David got the hang of it more quickly, taking two shots in each of the first two ends then one shot in the next four to lead 8-0. Then Terry began to pick his length more accurately, taking all three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to now trail 5-8. He needed all three shots in the final end to tie, and he nearly got them, but it was just two and David progressed with a win by 8-7.
