Best Ever Hoffman Cup?

We have had some wonderful Hoffman Cup days, but there were many comments that this year’s competition, which I missed, was the best ever. Some correlation, perhaps? Though it may have helped that with eight participants from both Cranborne and RBBG we had two groups which could play a full round robin to allow the group winners to play the final. And it was interesting that no pairing managed to win all their matches.

In Group B Graham and Hans came the closest with two wins in their first two matches but held to a tie by Margaret and Geoff in their last. Nevertheless, Graham and Hans had accumulated seven points to progress to the final, but a special mention to Geoff and Marian whose total of 23 shots for was easily the highest in the group matches and secured them third place overall
Group A was very tight with only four shots covering the individual shots for total of each of the four pairs. Elana and Alison deservedly went through as they had not only the highest number of shots for (18) but also the lowest shots against, but with the same number of games won and points gained Paul and Maurice had run them very close.

The finale provided a fitting finale, with the regulation six ends ending in a tie. On the extra end it was Alison’s wood for the shot that saw Elana and Alison step forward to collect the trophy. They were the only all female pairing on the day, with four pairs mixed, the other three all male – that says something good about bowls as well. Graham and Hans had to settle for runners-up, with Geoff and Marian, as stated above, taking third on shots scored in the round robins.

There were cash prizes, too, for those three pairs, kindly donated by Doreen (Belsom), who once again masterminded the day with great efficiency. No one else understands how to put this competition together like Doreen!
