Bella's Shield - FINAL

Hans v Maurice

Hans set the opening jack at twenty-nine yards and bowled to one foot, but Maurice took the end at seven inches. He set a thirty yard jack and pushed it on a further two feet with his opening wood, taking shot at one foot; Hans took second and Maurice led 2-0.
Maurice then set the first of five full length or near full length jacks, and in the first three ends he took a single shot for 5-0. Hans looked to have a chance to open his account in the sixth as he looked favourite on a measure, but Maurice’s final wood promoted his own wood into clear shot, and the contact stopped that final wood in its progress enough to secure second, and a 7-0 lead. He almost repeated the manoeuvre in the seventh end but Hans retained shot to lie 1-7 in the match.

Hans now set a very short jack, just a foot above minimum distance but it was Maurice with two very good woods within fourteen inches who controlled the end to lie two up. Hans’ final wood was played with weight to take those two out but it was his own wood, lying third, that he took out and with three shots Maurice led 10-1 with three ends to play. Hans would now need three maximums to take the match into extra time. Maurice set a twenty-seven yard jack. There were four woods in a measure for second but with the shot to Maurice, no need to make that measure. Maurice had retained his title, 11-1 on the scoreboard and clear winner but with seven of the nine ends decided by a single shot he had needed to be on his game, and full marks to Hans for sticking to his task, when after five single shot losses to trail 0-5 after five ends he had joked ‘This is getting boring’! Never boring, good play by both, but Maurice the 2018 winner.
